AIDS agency expands to serve 30 Ohio counties
by Tom Wamsley
Dayton-This year, the Ohio Office of Housing and Community Partnerships has provided AIDS Resource Center Ohio with funding to geographically expand housingrelated services for people living with HIV and AIDS and their families.
The Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) grant provides funding to extend housing-related supportive services (case management), and rent, mortgage and utility assistance for those within a ten-county region extending as far east as Coshocton County, and as far north as Sandusky in Erie County. This brings to thirty the number of counties being provided with HOPWA and other ARC Ohio services.
"Significantly for our clients, this allows us to work in these counties to integrate housing-related support with other services that we are or will be providing, similar to our expansion into the Lima region last year," explains ARC Ohio executive director Bill Hardy.
In 2002, ARC Ohio opened its Lima office
to serve the twelve-county region known as Consortium 9A, as defined by the Ohio Department of Health. This resulted in expanded services for those in that region, through additional case management, and by integrating these services with housing assistance and other ARC Ohio-administered re-
sources.
"Many of these are outlying areas where education and support services are inadequate," states Hardy. "Steps like this help ARC Ohio reach out to meet the changing needs of people with HIV and AIDS in the communities where they live."
By extending our service area, we will make available to those within much of western Ohio our continuum of quality HIVrelated support and prevention resources.
